At this spot the pass was officially opened. The story goes that at 9 o'clock on the 19th of January 1848 , a colourful procession departed from the George Town Hall. John Montague led the pageant on horseback, through a decorated triumphal arch. The honour of opening the pass fell to Mrs Geesje Bergh, wife of the former Civil Commissioner of George. She drove in her own wagon, accompanied by ten young ladies chastely dressed in white, and was met at this spot by Mr Montague.
