This cache overlooks Marlette Lake, at an elevation of 7850'. Finding this cache will involve a 6 mile hike or mountain bike ride (one way), if you start at Spooner Lake Park. The trail is not very steep. It is well maintained. The scenery is beautiful.
Engineered by Herman Schussler, Marlette Lake was created in 1873 to provide a reservoir for Virginia City. From Marlette Lake, the water was carried via a flume to a tunnel carved through the mountains. Since Marlette Lake is at an elevation of 7800', and Virginia City is at an elevation of 6200', an inverted siphon was built that carried the water from the Tahoe Basin, across Washoe Valley, to Five Mile Reservoir above Virginia City. These days, the Nevada Division of Wildlife captures spawning fish at the lake for it's fish hatchery program. The NDOW site is about 1/2 mile southeast of the cache. No fishing is allowed at Marlette Lake, to keep a plentiful population of fish to capture.
There is a $6 charge to park at Spooner Lake.
The cache is a small clear plastic cylinder, located a few feet off of the trail. When placed, it contained: some slot tokens, some British coins, a few golf tees, and a bottle opener.
