Previous cachers have marked the upper and lower trailheads. This
spot is where the Sheep Camp Trail crosses the access road to an
I-280 scenic overlook. The overlook parking lot (see waypoint) is
the spot to stop if you plan a hike. You are looking for a
camo-taped spice jar.
This quiet trail is also historic ground of a sort. In the
mid-19th century, a stagecoach route ran from El Camino at Belmont,
up what is now Ralston Avenue, through the current Water Dog Lake
Preserve, and then over the ridge and down to the west along this
Sheep Camp Trail, to connect with a further route to the coast side
and
West Union. This ended when Upper Crystal Springs reservoir was
closed in 1877 and flooded the western end of the road. The old
stage route lapsed into a service road and now hiking
trail.
