From the parking off Fairview Road follow the yellow blazes steeply up the driveway and turn left into the woods. The trail continues to climb. Then it levels off for a little while before descending. One of the striking trees in the woods is the Oak Tree. Red oaks have leaves with pointed lobes. White oaks have leaves with rounded lobes. The Red Oak grows straight and tall, to 90 ft. and even up to 140 feet. The trunk is up 20–40 inches in diameter. It has stout branches growing at right angles to the stem, forming a narrow round-topped head. Trees may live up to 500 years but none along the Horseshoe Trail are so old!
You are looking for a Red Oak Tree and the cache which it protects, a short bushwack off the main trail.
