Geocache Description:

Smiths Falls Then and Now is a series that I've wanted to start for a couple years now. Having done some "Getting to know ....." caches in the Ottawa Valley, I figured with the history of Smiths Falls, we deserved some too.
The historic info about the locations in this series has been obtained from books about Smiths Falls. Very interesting stuff.

The upper town school later known as Central School.
When it was built in 1871, this robust Classical Revival school with it's handsome cupola for the bell was the finest school building in all Lanark County.
With the annexation of Shawville, Elgin and Matheson villages along with steady growth within Smith's Falls itself, seven years later the size of this school doubled with an addition at the rear.
