These coords will get you to Mancil Root's grave site. Mancil Root was not yet 10 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army. He was reported to be the youngest soldier in the Civil War.
There are 213 Civil War veterans buried in Oak Shade Cemetary. For more information please visit the Marion Heritage Center, open Wed-Sun, 1-4pm.
Mancil is buried beside his wife Ida. Note both dates given on Ida's grave marker.
In ALL following math problems, write dates as a number with a decimal. Examples: 1946 = 1.946 1877 = 1.877 1930 = 1.930
Coords for second cache:
Add both dates given on Ida's tombstone. Write down the result(A).
1. Add result (A) to 91 32.098 to obtain W longitude coord.
2. Subtract the result (A) from 42 05.797 to obtain N latitude.
On second cache site, note the date it was erected. This is result (B).
Coords for third cache:
1. Subtract result (B) from 42 03.885 to obtain N latitude.
2. Add result (B) to 91 32.809 to obtain W longitude.
On third stage, find the dates listed under LUMIR E. DOSTAL. Write down the earlier date as result (C). Write the later date as result (D).
Coords for final cache:
1. Subtract result (C) from 42 03.891 to obtain N latitude.
2. Add result (D) to 91 33.991 to obtain W longitude.
Final cache container is about four inches tall with room for a log only. Please bring your own pencil.
