Geocache Description:

Check you GPS accuracy to mine and others.

West of the Winchester Fire Dept is a guard rail. I have chosen this area because it has no tall obstructions or electrical wires. Park you car at least 50' North from the cache as not to interfere with you GPS reception. I have painted the top of the middle post green. This is where you need to put your GPS. Make sure you let it have enought time to average and settle down. Record the data, and move your GPS 50-100 feet due North and bring back to post. Let it settle down and record readings. Are the readings the same. (When I set a cache I move my GPS away in all four directions and bring it back to the cache and record and average all 5 readings. I try to do this on 2 or 3 days). The key is to give your GPS time to settle.

A lot of you do not know that the Government scrambles the GPS signals and 10 feet is the best you can hope for and the manufactures will guarantee 30 feet. As an example. If you set a cache and get good cords-you could be 10 feet to far West of true. Your friend comes to find your cache and his can be 10 feet East of true for a difference of 20 feet. And this is in ideal conditions. These GPS's are wonderful gadgets to play with but just remember if your GPS is right on, the cache can still be a ways off. This is why your Geo-Sense is so important. I hate the cachers that put in their log the cache co-ords are off.

This cache proves that it does not make a difference what brand of GPS you have, if you wait until your GPS settles down all brands will be close. The only differences in GPS is the extras you pay for. If you don't believe me look at all the logs. Another cacher did the same thing in Washington and found the same results. Just because you pay more, it will not be any more accurate than a cheaper model.

If dollars are important buy the cheap models with few extras. If you have special applications then buy those extras that will apply.

Have fun and I hope you check out just fine in your accuracy. Come back several times and check you readings out more than once to see the difference. I did this and was surprised by the differences in different days.
