igloo13: The time has come to archive the Tour By-Cycle series. Thanks to all those who took the time to find these caches and provide comments and views in the logs. Particular congratulations to those who took up the challenge of the series and did it by bike. Despite being so close to London, we are lucky enough to have many quiet roads and lanes around here, that are ideal for cycling and provide good views at a slower speed.

Geocache Description:

Camouflaged small sized container.

This series sets out to provide cyclists with the opportunity to take a 19.5 kilometre spin around the countryside and pick up 20 caches along the way. The series can be undertaken in two parts if 19.5kms is too much in one go, i.e. you can go straight from cache 10 to cache 19 or c18 to cache 11, depending on which loop you are doing. Obviously the series can also be undertaken by car or even on foot. Originally, the intention was to bring the route through the Rothamsted Estate, (visit link) in Harpenden, using the bridleways. However, some of the tracks are difficult to walk in damp conditions, never mind cycle. Perhaps this will be something to update in the future.

For cyclists, the series can be started at any point along the way, if parking is not an issue. As far as possible, the series uses quiet routes and left turns to avoid crossing traffic. It can be cycled using road bikes but is more suited in places to hybrids and mountain bikes.

There is good parking near cache 1 at N51.47.483 W000.24.388. There are places to stop for caching and dashing at most locations but please take care when driving and parking on the quiet lanes. There is no through route for cars between cache 11 and cache 12.

You may wish to pick up any of three caches, that are not part of the series but are on or near the route. Shrek’s Request – Gingerbread Man (GC1AJX3) comes before Tour By-Cycle 11, View of Puddingstone (GCZFE6) comes before Tour By-Cycle 18 and The Nicky Line #4 (GCRN45) comes before Tour By-Cycle 19.

There are First to Find certificates where the cache is big enough to take one. The caches contain cycling related items. If possible, keep up the theme.
