This cache overlooks some nice cascades and refreshing pools of Kitchen creek. Not far off the Pacific Crest Trail it is relatively easy to reach after a 2.5 mile hike. We parked at the closed down Boulder Oaks campground on old Hwy. 80 and hiked the PCT north. (You can start from anywhere along the PCT so the time and distance will vary depending on where you begin). The altitude at the cache site is approx. 3700 feet, an elevation gain of 600 feet from Boulder Oaks.
This is our second cache and includes a candle, a dance music CD, some vegetable and flower seeds, glow in the dark toys, a padlock, retractable dog leash, and various other small items. Feel free to take a couple of photos with the enclosed camera. The real reward is a beautiful secluded spot in the high desert of east county. There was plenty of water flowing in the creek on April 1, but as time goes by we suspect it will eventually dry up. It's still a nice spot though any time of year. It will be hot in the summer, so carry plenty of water and of course be wary of snakes. Look for a narrow trail that leads down into the canyon off the PCT. If you are coming from Boulder Oaks this will be around mile 2.28. This is a great hike to bring the dog along. Allow 2-3 hours for the whole trip.
