Geocache Description:

The original Gilgal Church stood at the Due West crossroads several hundred yards west of here. It was destroyed in battle in June 1864 and was never rebuilt. Just past the parking area to the left are the remains of actual trenches. Straight ahead is a replica of how completed earthworks and trenches would have appeared. Please respect the actual trenches and explore the replica.

One of the Union commanding officers at this location was Major General Daniel Butterfield, composer of "Taps".
