Geocache Description:

This is one of ten caches placed for Cache Across Maryland (CAM) 2012.
Each location was picked specifically to give you a taste of the state
and show you just a part of its beauty.

CAM 2012!

By visiting all ten CAM caches, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly
"America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

THIS CACHE IS ONLY AVAILABLE FROM DAWN TO DUSK!

In 1679 two brothers-in-law, Charles Rackliffe and Edward Wale, were granted 2200 acres in South Point overlooking the Sinepuxent Bay. They divided the land between them, and the Rackliffe portion played its role as a cradle of seaside civilization.

Constructed in 1752, the Rackliffe Plantation House is a fine example of an 18th century coastal plantation house. Despite suffering serious fire damage in 1928, the house and property stayed in the Rackliffe family until it was eventually abandoned and bought by the state in the 1990s. The house and 5 acres of land are currently managed by the Rackliffe Plantation House Conservancy. The house, now a museum, has been restored to its original 1752 appearance and will eventually interpret its history and that of the surrounding coastal bays. Legend to be haunted, and visited by modern-day ghost hunters, the stories involving the house and its occupants (some by those currently doing construction on the house) continue to thrill and entice those who visit. During Your Visit ....

Please park at the posted parking coords located at the Assateague Island Visitor Center. There is no fee to access the area. It's roughly a 1/2 mile walk from the posted parking to the cache.

PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE TO THE CACHE!

The waypointed mowed trail is wide and flat and offers a scenic water view. It is suitable for 3-wheeled strollers. Those cachers with wheelchairs or urban strollers may instead choose to take the less scenic lane to the house, but please do not drive down the lane! The cache itself is not wheelchair accessible, but those cachers should be able to at least get to GZ with minimal assistance. Please be advised that the house is protected by an alarm system. Feel free to take a peak in the windows, but please do not attempt to open any doors unless plantation volunteers invite you to do so. The Assateague Island Visitor Center is open daily from 9-5. The National Park Service Visitor Center Restrooms are open 24 hours a day. Trash bins and picnic tables are also available at the Visitor Center. If you have the time, take the trip across the bridge to the beach. More likely you will be able to spot some of the famous wild ponies along the road.

PLEASE DO NOT FEED OR APPROACH THE PONIES!
