Adolph Sutro was born in Prussia and educated as an engineer. In 1850 he came West as part of the Gold Rush. He met with no success in the gold fields, made a fortune in Nevada's Comstock Lode and retired to San Francisco.
In 1881, Sutro bought most of the western headlands of San Francisco and made built a grand home there. He purchased the Cliff House and remodeled it into a respectable destination. Not content with just a restaurant at the ocean's edge, Sutro won the mayor's office and began planning a natatorium.
His Sutro Baths opened in 1896 after a total expenditure of over a million dollars. 1,600 bathers could be accomodated by seven pools which ranged, with ten-degree gaps, from ice-cold to a steaming warm eighty degrees. A theatre sat 3,700 and put on a variety of shows. There were natural history exhibits, galleries of sculptures, paintings, tapestries and artifacts from exotic cultures, all protected from the often blustery seaside climate by a roof of 100,000 panes of glass. It was the place to go in it's heyday.
The baths burned down in 1966. Come see the remains. Be careful near the water.
The posted coordinates are the parking lot. If the parking lot is closed, you may park across the street in Sutro Heights park lot.
Waypoint 1: N 37 46.841, W 122 30.723 - Ohlone Plaque. "A Small Tribe would consist of A to BC villages".
Waypoint 2: N 37 46.845, W 122 30.851 - Inside the nearby tunnel is a railing made of steel pipe. The number of vertical pipes embedded in the tunnel floor is D.
Waypoint 3: N 37 46.871, W 122 30.854 - Look due north to see Mile Rocks Light. Although it is flat-topped now, at one time a lighthouse tower capped the superstructure you see. There is no question to answer here, I just think the light is neat.
Waypoint 4: N 37 46.882, W 122 30.773 - Ohlone plaque. "Studies indicate that this site was used repeatedly from ad EFG to HIJ."
