This is the replacement for the original "Groover Duty" that was placed in approximately the same area. This one is hidden a bit better and may be more resistant to muggles.

"What do you use ammo cans for other than Geocaches?"


That was the question posed by Rusty_TLC on the GBES Geocachers discussion group. We were asked to submit our ideas and a poll would be used to determined the best idea. The winner would win a pre-made cache complete with swag, a log, pencils, and even a travel bug. A tempting prize.

Well... it happens that ammo cans play a big part in our other hobby. When we aren't geocaching, you are likely to find us running rivers. There is a group of 25 of us in Reno that own 6 rafts and over a dozen whitewater kayaks. We run numerous rivers every year. Several of these trips are multi-day trips. For example, we spent 8 days on the Middle Fork of the Salmon and 7 days on the Main Salmon in Idaho. Last summer (2006) we rafted through Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and Utah. We rafted the Rogue in Oregon in 2007.

Ammo cans are wonderful at keeping the river water OUT of things but they are also wonderful at keeping things in. In this case, we use them as portable toilets. River etiquette demands that we leave nothing behind. During the early years of river running, no one had invented adequate river toilet systems so the standard practice was to carry large 20mm Ammo Cans and to use them as jons. The only problem is that sitting on an ammo can without a moulded seat leaves a set of parallel "grooves" on your posterior. Thus, even though modern toilets no longer cause this disfigurement, ammo cans used as river toilets have become affectionately known as "Groovers."

When we divy up the jobs on the river, "Groover Duty" means that it is your job to find a scenic spot to set up the groover. It is also your job to clean it and pack it. Over the years, we have found some awesome spots to set-up the groover. The spot where this cache is located would be a good groover location. It is near a stream, has trees for a bit of privacy, and, at least in the fall, an awesome view. When it was placed, there were hundreds of aspens in the area adorned with bright yellow leaves.

Please - Do NOT use this ammo can for a groover.
