Geocache Description:

Located in Machias near the lower end of Main St.
Ample parking within feet of the cache to the south.

For many years railroads were a mainstay of the community and the county. Originally called the Washington County Railroad & later controlled by Maine Central Railroad. This particular system was refered to as the "Calais Branch" running from Brewer to Calais with a spur to Eastport.
Aside from passenger service the line was primarily transporting lumber, paper products, granite & dry goods.
The rail service was discontinued in the 80's and the remains now belong to the State of Maine.
There has been much talk, but little action, on converting the line under the "Rails to Trails" conservency.. the jury's still out on that.

Currently many folks hike along the rail line from Machias to East Machias as it follows the Machias river and is quite scenic at high tide. The line is also used as a snowmobile trail in the winter months. ATV's are discouraged.

This cache marks a remanent of the railroad. It is reachable with your feet on the ground. Area is visible to muggles. Bring a pencil.
