Geocache Description:

As part of the Historic Shenandoah Valley" (HSV) series, what you are looking for is a micro cache hidden with permission at Stonewall's Tomb in Lexington.

lexington-01869-mt

The cemetery itself began as the burial ground for the old Lexington Presbyterian Church in 1789. General Stonewall Jackson, 144 Confederate veterens, two Virginia govenors, John Letcher and James McDowell, and Margaret Junkin Preston, the Civil War Poet Laureate of the South are buried here.

Maps of the cemetery may be obtained at the Lexington Visitor Center, but are not necessary for your search for this find.

To begin your search, stand in front of the statue of Stonewall Jackson, facing not only the statue but the small iron gate that faces the statue.

The statue itself was sculpted by Edward Valentine and was dedicated July 21, 1891.

Jackson and his family are buried beneath the statue.

Look at the dates on the statue itself, and you will find the year Stonewall was born.

Add the four digits of the year together and consider this "A".

Do the same for the four digits of the year he died and consider this "B".

Now, look down to the base of the statue where you will find the grave marker for his infant daughter.

The child was *almost* how many months old before she left this earth? ... This is "C".

A + B + C = D

What you are looking for is a micro cache hidden very close to where stand in front of the gate.

Looking at the statue, which side does Stonewall's sword hang on?

Begin at the spike (consider this zero) attached to the top of the post from which the gate is attached ... on the same side as the sword.

Using that iron spike as zero, count the spikes until you reach the number that equals "D".

Please note there is no need to leave the walkway to find the cache.

As a micro cache, there is only enough room for the logbook, so make sure you bring a writing instrument as well as something like a safety pin to assist with log removal.

Remember to return the cache to exact location you found it so the muggles don't so easily stumble across it!!!

Congrats to Team FairCorn for being first to find on March 5, 2009!
