An interesting walk of about one hour up to Oversley castle outside Alcester. This can be done as a circular walk from Exhall via Wixford, passing two lovely churches, a very unusual "Horse House", and the pretty village of Exhall.
There are several paths up to Oversley Castle but for the above walk start at Exhall. Parking is on the road side at the beginning of a footpath at N52 11.776 W001 50.876. This is a gentle walk up the hill. There is another footpath from the middle of the village but this involves quite a steep hill and some stiles. The paths can be muddy after rain. The village of Exhall is worth walking through with all its pretty cottages and old church. The old church at Wixford has, in the churchyard, a very rare building built in the 18th century. It is called a horse house; its walls are made from hurdle and gorse and it has a thatched roof. It was built to provide shelter for the horses of visiting clergymen. Once you reach the "castle" there are extensive views to the Cotswolds and Malverns and you also get a glimpse of Ragley Hall. The castle is now a private house but was built as a folly in the late 18th century to gratify a whim of the Prince Regent who was a close friend of the owners of nearby Ragley Hall. The Prince Regent thought the view from Ragley Hall would be much improved by the building of this "folly". Ragley Hall is worth a visit as is the old town of Alcester. For refreshments there are two pubs in Wixford. The cache is a small tupperware box containing the usual bits and pieces.
Being not far from Ryknield Street, a hint is "in a dead Quercus Robus"
