Geo13's recent spate of Richmond County caches (his 'Country Roads' and 'Richmond County Signs' series of caches) has inspired this set of Richmond County caches. Although we have placed caches seemingly all over the state, there's plenty of history right here at home!!
The impressive ruins that you see from the location of this cache is a sight that many visitors to Richmond County remember. These kudzu covered walls are so distinctly southern that Hootie and the Blowfish actually filmed part of the video for the song "The Old Man and Me" among them. Many visitors beleive the story that these are ruins of a mill burned when Sherman's forces came through the area during the late days of the Civil War. Actually, that is only partially true. The ruins that you see here are from the Great Falls Mill that burned on September 9, 1972, some thirty years after it was closed. Construction of the Great Falls Mill began in 1869 and was finished in 1871. However, the Great Falls Mill was built using the old foundation and dam of the Richmond Manufacturing Company mill, which was, indeed, burned by Union forces in 1865.
Of course, respect these historic ruins. They are both fragile and dangerous, and best admired from a distance. There is absolutely no need to enter them in order to get the cache.
