The Paper Dome build in Japan originally, Their St. Peter's
Church was destroyed during the quake on Jan 17, 1995, and a
Japanese architect created the paper dome for use as a temporary
church eight months later.
The architect used 58 huge cardboard columns as supporting
pillars for the water-and-shock-resistant structure he built.
Besides serving as the temporary parish church, it also became a
base for volunteer relief activities in the Kobe area, where
Takatori is located. It was taken down in 2005, and a new concrete
church was inaugurated there in May 2007.
The structure impressed New Homeland officials when they
attended activities commemorating the 10th anniversary of the
Hanshin quake in 2005, and they hoped to relocate it to Taiwan as a
solidarity exchange.
In early 2008, the cardboard columns were airlifted to the
rebuilt community in Puli. A canopy made of nanotechnology plastic
fiber was added as a roof. Inside the dome, sidelong cardboard
columns form benches, giving the structure a seating capacity of 80
people.
