A CITO event in Oxford taking place from 10:00 until 12:00pm
coinciding with the global Cache In Trash Out 2010 initiative.
In collaboration with OxClean I am very happy to present the second
CITO event in Oxford. This is an excellent opportunity to
contribute to the beauty of our wonderful town. OxClean have very
kindly agreed to lend us litter pickers and high vis vests and will
supply us with bags for the rubbish we collect.
A Bit About OxClean.
OxClean is an Oxford Civic Society initiative committed to cleaning
up Oxford and keeping our city clean and tidy all year round
– thereby helping make Oxford a more pleasant place for
people to live, work and visit. OxClean works in partnership with
Oxford City Council and The Oxford Times. Our activities have two
key focuses:
- Cleaning up accumulated litter and rubbish. OxClean
co-ordinates an annual Spring
Clean and promotes River
Week. During Spring Clean 2010, 117 local community
groups (fielding more than 1500 volunteers) carried out 2 hour
litter picks across the city. Oxford’s Boaters will be taking
to the Thames and its tributaries in April 2010. We also run year
round campaigns to get the cities ring road and other grotspots
cleaned up.
- Preventing litter dropping. Don’t Drop It! is the theme of this
campaign which includes public awareness, targeting sources, causes
and places (eg ’on the go eating and drinking’, litter
bin provision in Ring Road laybys) and a Schools' Anti Litter Campaign.
The Area
The area we will be cleaning up is along the sides of Donnington
Bridge/Weirs Lane, which has been identified by OxClean as one of
their "Grot Spots". The area cuts between Long Bridges Nature Park
and Iffley Meadow on the other side, definitely areas worth keeping
clear of litter. Hopefully we can use these couple of hours to help
make a difference. I also intend to place a couple of new caches
somewhere in the area to coincide with the CITO event.
What to bring
Participants will require sturdy clothing and shoes (wellington
boots etc), gardening gloves, drinking water and a sense of fun.
Wet weather gear may also be necessary depending on the
conditions.
Safety
Very clear safety instructions provided by OxClean will be read out
and will also be available to read on the day. Please note: If you take part in this event you do so at
your own risk. OxClean and I will not be held responsible for any
injury's resulting from this activity. As we will be
working near a road and/or a waterway all children must be under
the direct supervision of an adult.
Parking/Transport
The most convenient parking is at the nearby Redbridge Park and
Ride (N 51 43.774, W 001 14.910). It is only half a mile walk to
the event GZ. Details of the buses servicing the area can be found
here.
On The Day
We will meet at the published coordinates at about 9:50am for a
10:00am start (please be on time) to hand out the equipment, sign
everyone in and read out the safety instructions.
Post Event
I have reserved space at the Prince of Wales, Church Way, Iffley,
Oxford, OX4 4EF (N 51° 43.811 W 001° 14.232) so that we can share
some lunch and hopefully some new CITO stories! I'm struggling to
get this published as a separate event at the moment as I missed
the two week submission deadline, so hopefully this can still go
ahead...
Prizes
There will be a couple of CITO related prizes up for grabs
(stickers, keyring, patch and maybe a geocoin), so make sure you
get your caching name into the draw box on the day. I intend to
draw out the winners names at the pub event afterwards.
Please add this cache to your watchlist so I can keep you up date
with any news or developments. See you there!
