Geocache Description:

This is not a drive to cache but one of the many forgotten locations from the past. In Maine there are hundreds of cemeteries that are not longer maintained or even along a road.

There is a place in every New England town where you can find art, culture, history, poetry, theology, philosophy, anthropology and more, all in an outdoor park setting for free. This can all be found in each town’s burying grounds. With today’s society’s attitudes towards death, the wealth of information these early burying grounds provide usually goes unnoticed and neglected. These people have shaped the events and history that has molded this country side into what it was in the past. Although many of their possessions are long gone and their homes torn down, not to be found in or as museums, their last and most personal possession and monument to their memory can still be seen after many years have passed. Unlike today where we usually find only the years of a person’s birth and death on their stone, gravestones of centuries past told the story of their lives and hardships.

When you lift off the stigma these places have received through the changes in society’s beliefs over the centuries, you can see underneath the culturally valuable and interesting places they are to visit. Use them as outdoor museums, and they display a summary of sorts of the history of America, and show us a study of our culture. All that is left of the community of Santiago is the Moulton Cemetery and a number of stone foundations. Place take the item to explore the area as you may find some unique locations. I found the foundations to be interesting, the stone walls still remain as properties lines from long ago and the stone are worth the effort to read. Look at the dates on the stones as they tell a story of hardships of these people.

Maine Spirit Quest #34 in a series used to remember people, places or events and bring you to the location that would have otherwise been forgotten.
