Geocache Description:

Congratulations 'paulapap' - FTF! The cave overlooking Ramla Bay has been associated by many authors with the Homeric legendary epic the ODYSSEY. It gained this ascription during the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries when interest in the island of Gozo was Increased following the discovery of the Ggantija Temples in Xaghra and interest in the classical literature was revamped.

Voyagers following the Grand Tour were also always in search of places connected with classical texts and this cave started to be visited by 0 visitors to the island. The cave commands one of the most beautiful views of Gozo with the sandy beach of Ramla Bay and the fertile valleys beyond. The Cave has been formed in the upper coralline limestone. A characteristic of this layer is that it fragments easily with the consequence that boulders fall down the clay slopes beneath. The movement 1 of the boulders have resulted in several collapses inside the cave which have made it unsafe for visitors.  A geological survey will be carried out which will establish the state of the existing cave roof and surroundings. This will help in establishing which boulders need to be stanchioned so as to render the cave safe for visitors and ensure its preservation for the future.  Though the cave roof has been propped up, yet it is still unsafe to go down inside the cave. We appreciate your cooperation.
