Cœur névralgique du Quartier Latin, la Sorbonne est beaucoup plus qu’une Université, c’est une véritable institution. Inaugurée en 1257 par le théologien Robert de Sorbon, elle n’a cessé de représenter durant les siècles passés la qualité et le prestige de l’enseignement français, ancré dans une tradition humaniste profonde.
Sans rentrer dans les détails historiques, voici au moins quelques points de repères :
- XIII ème siècle : la Sorbonne acquiert une renommée grandissante
- 1469 : Jean Heynlin y installe la première imprimerie de France
- Le Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) devient Proviseur et fait construire la célèbre chapelle
- Après la Révolution française, la Sorbonne est considérée comme « un temple à la déesse Raison »
- Mai 1968 : Elle est le théâtre de violents affrontements entre la police et une jeunesse révoltée
Aujourd’hui cette université compte environ 35 000 étudiants, dont un pourcentage important d’étrangers. Du fait de son statut privilégié, le bâtiment principal de la Sorbonne n’est pas ouvert au public ; seuls les professeurs et les étudiants peuvent y pénétrer, en présentant leur carte. La Sorbonne is at the very heart of the Parisian district called “Quartier Latin”. That is far more than a mere university, that’s a real institution. Since its foundation in 1257 by the Church man Robert de Sorbon, it has represented for centuries the quality and the prestige of the French education, anchored in a deep humanist tradition.
Without considering specific historical details, here are at least a few landmarks:
- 13th century : la Sorbonne becomes quickly famous
- 1469 : Jean Heynlin establishes the first French printing house
- The Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) becomes director and builds the famous chapel
- After the French Revolution, la Sorbonne is presented as “a temple to the Goddess Reason”
- May 1968 : It is a central place in the fights between the police and revolted students
Today this University welcomes about 35.000 students, including a lot of foreigners. Because of its particular status, the main building of La Sorbonne is not open to the public; only students and teachers are allowed to enter, by presenting a valid card.
