Die Erde baut ein Gebirge
Das Wiehengebirge zieht sich von der Porta Westfalica in westliche Richtung
bis nördlich von Osnabrück. Es ist - wie das gegenüberliegende Wesergebirge
auch - in der Landschaft Norddeutschlands als eine weithin sichtbare " Stufe,
Rippe oder als Kamm zu erkennen.
Harte Gesteine der Dogger- und Malm-Zeit wurden als
Sedimente über weichen Tonsteinen der älteren Jura-Zeit abgelagert. Die
Gesteinsschichten lagen ursprünglich horizontal. Durch Hebung bzw. Absenkung
sind sie schräg gestellt worden. Weichere Gesteinsschichten wurden in
Jahrmillionen abgetragen, härtere hielten der Verwitterung stand und bilden im
Gelände einen deutlich sichtbaren, markant ausgeprägten Gebirgskamm.
