Palm Peak Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: When it announced that Anza Borrego Desert State Park would no longer allow geocaches, this cache was disabled in hopes that we could come to an arrangement where some geocaches could remain in the Park. Many years have passed and the situation has not changed and as this cache owner now seems to be inactive, I am archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Near Palm benchmark in eastern Santa Rosas on a 2700' peak. Very difficult and dangerous area.

This requires a difficult hike, and is not for the novice. Terraine is intense! I did a loop hike, and on the way back, had to retrace part of my hike a few times. If you go down a different ridge, you may run into the following problem, which was expressed well by Edward Abbey in "Desert Solitaire". Dropping into the wash the first time
in my return, I ran into a 30' dry waterfall, so I went over to the next wash. I committed to this wash, but
wound up having to descend a 6' drop, followed by a 10' drop, followed by a 12' drop -- all with high vertical walls on each side. Go figure what would happen if I ran into a 50' drop with night fast approaching and out of water. Final drop was into main Palm Wash, and I made it back easily after that.

Start at the Calcite Mine at N33 17.955 W116 06.614, and follow the trail up the ridge. Path is self-evident, but a few areas might seem difficult at first.

Near Palm Peak, about 0.1 miles west, on the ridge before it drops, you can find a lone rock standing up like a diminutive monument, less than 3' tall. On it's west side, protected by rocks, is a mason jar, containing the following items:

4 pieces of calcite found at the nearby mine
1 slice of polished blue agate
1 guitar pick
1 golf ball
1 New Mexico refrig. magnet
1 camera timer
1 barnacle
1 notebook
1 pencil
