Borrego Backcountry Linked Caches Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: Back when the news that Anza Borrego was decided to ban geocaching within its borders, we disabled most of the caches in hopes that a negotiated solution would allow geocaching in some form within ABDSP.

A few years on, the situation has not changed. In the meantime, some of the caches have gone missing and some of the cache owners have faded from the game. The Southern California Reviewers discussed this recently and we have come to the reluctant conclusion that perhaps the time has come to move on.

I am, therefore, archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

First cache in this chain is in Palm Canyon, at about 2372' elevation, about 10 yards north of what may be the highest palm in the canyon, under a rock overhang. A $100 bill is in cache 5.

No "worthy" caches are currently in the Borrego area, so these very "hard-to-get-to" caches are now in place. Each of the first 5 caches in this chain are not for cache-potatoes, and require long, difficult hikes. The links will continue after 5. An easier set of links, going from 13 down to 7 were added in June 2002. Cache 7 is in the "mouth of the shark". Note: cache 13 to 7 series will be added as another multicache.

Jef Cache 1, contains

  • penny
  • notebook
  • pencil
  • candy cane
  • frog keychain
  • refrig magnet
  • arrowhead
  • sea shell
  • photo of first 5 caches
  • link to cache 2

Each cache, except cache 5, is a jar wrapped in red duct tape, with a blue lid. Cache 1 is a half gallon container, but caches get smaller with increasing number. The first 5 caches contain US currencies that are powers of 10, ranging from 1 penny in cache 1, up to $100 in cache 5. Cache 5 is a crock container with similar color conventions.

Hikes required to get to each cache range from 6+ hours for cache 1, up to 12 hours for cache 5. The difficulty is in getting to these caches, not finding them after getting there. Very few people will be up to getting there.

Start either at visitor center (add an hour to hike), or the Borrego Palm Canyon campground trailhead (add $5 for parking).

To visit all caches, you must also visit cache 13, and follow links back to link 7. The following table summarizes where all caches were placed:

Jef Cache Summary

each cache is red with blue lid, and in addition to a unit of currency also contain a pencil, notebook, and link to next cache in series.
