This cache is being placed as a Christmas present for the E
kids. Two kids who are very excited about geocaching thought that
having a cache of their own to get people to come to a cool place
would be really neat.
If you've been to Big Four Arches, you might wonder where the
name came from, since it only has THREE arches. Turns out there was
once a Big Four Railroad. Named for the primary cities it served,
the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St Louis Railroad had
several branches throughout Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, to include
Oakalla Station, just outside Greencastle. This station was on the
Big Four mainline between Terre Haute and Indianapolis which ran
over a high arched concrete span crossing Big Walnut Creek. This
span is called Big Four Arches.
The CCC&StL (Big Four) Railroad is long gone, but the tracks
are still active with freight trains on a daily basis. The tracks
and bridge are property of Conrail (CSX), and the railroad
considers anyone on their tracks or bridges to be trespassing.
Don't risk getting hit by a train just for a nice view.
The cache is hidden within view of the bridge, near a natural
rock wall. The terrain rating is only as high as it is due to
thorns and thick underbrush, as well as poison-"whatever" (oak and
ivy, at a minimum) on the approach during warm months. Definitely
NOT a shorts and sandals location!
