The Mystery Crater Remembered Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

timrs2001: Well it’s had a good run but times change and people don’t carry extra supplies like the old days to fix up an ailing cache. I don’t get down this way at all these days, so off it goes into archive land.

Geocache Description:

Penobsquis, NB On highway #1, take exit 211. Park just outside the gate and follow your gps to the cache.

In 1985 I was living in Ontario. My best friend Mike and I took a 2 week road trip to the Atlantic provinces.

I can't recall how we ended up visiting The Mystery Crater but it was amusing.

A big hole in the ground and a slanted building on the slope.

It was memorable though.
Inside the building were some optical illusions and a chair that you could not stand up from of no matter how hard you tried.

After all these years I finally understand that the attraction of this place was not the crater itself or how it came to be, but the "mysterious" phenomenon that it creates nearby. (In the building). Another example of this genre of roadside entertainment is the Oregon Vortex which is still around.
Have a look at this page Oregon Vortex. It is a carbon copy of the way this place was.
Even better, have a look here to see it explained. Mystery Spot.

4 1/2 years ago I moved to New Brunswick and tried to find out where the Mystery Crater was. Information about this place is very hard to find.

So I put the question out to my cacher pals. Energizer Bunny dug into it and tracked it down for me and for that I thank him.

I love these memories. I'm sorry that the old place isn't as it was but I'm happy to see it again after all these years.

If anyone has memories or photos of this place I would love to see them.

The property is now owned by Aqua Fish Farms and they have given permission to only go as far as where the geocache is hidden.
From the cache location you can see the remains of the old mystery crater and the building.
Do not go near the old building as it may be unsafe.
The owners were planning on tearing the old building down but just haven't had the heart to do so. They don't want to see anyone get hurt and they assume no liability should anything occur.

From what we know The Mystery Crater was once a booming tourist attraction for about 30 years until the mid 1980's when the Fish Farm bought the property. The owners of the Mystery Crater moved to Saint John where they both passed away only 2 to 3 years after doing so.

The cache is a plastic tobacco container with logbook, pencil, sharpener and the usual traders.
