Geocache Description:

"Evergreen" is named after the verdant Camphor Laurels of Honour Avenue in Chelmer.

These evergreen trees, standing tall and proud, were planted by local residents to be a "living testament to the enduring spirit" of those who served in World War I. Each leaf was designed to "whisper stories of bravery" and "each branch a salute". Originally named Albert Terrace, the road was renamed to "Honour Avenue" in response to a request from the Chelmer Progress association in 1917 for the "thirty-six residents of Chelmer [that] had answered the call of King and country". The Camphor Laurels, with their year-round greenery, were to symbolise the everlasting honour they held.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that council were presuaded by a request from locals for trees to be planted on the railway side of the avenue as well.…but they’re not the same trees. Camphor laurel (Camphora officinarum) were introduced to Australia in 1822 as an ornamental tree for use in gardens and public parks, but has since been classified a noxious weed throughout Queensland and central to northern New South Wales. The existing Camphor laurels in Chelmer remain for their history and character of the area, but new Camphor laurels are not planted.

Your quest is to find the cache hidden in this significant memorial landscape. As you search, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of these trees and the history they represent. Remember, the spirit of geocaching is not just about the find - it's about the journey. Enjoy the tranquillity of the avenue, the rustle of the evergreen leaves, and the sense of history that permeates the air.

Parking is plentiful on Honour Avenue and there is a paved path up to the GZ. Just watch out for the numerous local labradoodle owners walking their designer dogs.

Happy Geocaching!
