The first free settlers in Queensland were German missionaries who arrived in 1838 and made their home on the high ground just to the south of what is now German Station Park, attempting unsuccessfully to convert the local aborigines. They called their mission Zion Hill. You can read all about them at my first cache GC8A81G First & Free.
After the mission closed, many bought land and settled in the area, giving their names to many local roads. The area was called German Station for the next forty years, until the name was changed to Nundah.
You will find many of those pioneers buried in the Nundah Historic Cemetery right next to this park. Take the time to cross the little bridge and wander through it. The Nundah Historical Society has placed many informative markers on graves of interest. Look out for the life-size statue of the little boy who looks like a girl. At the northern end, you may manage to find a memorial to one of the victims of “the Bathurst Bay Hurricane”, actually 1899’s Cyclone Mahina, the first ever to be named and the deadliest in recorded Australian history.
This park has a small playground for the kids. The cache is a painted mint tin and easy to find. The only swaps you will be able to fit would need to be small and flat. Please bring your own pen/pencil. Replace the cache exactly as you found it, so muggles are less likely to spot it.
The main reason for this cache is to get you to visit the cemetery. But wear mozzie repellent.
Congratulations to Crookedpete for FTF.
