Geocache Description:

The Rev John Dunmore Lang wanted to attract people of good protestant stock to emigrate to Australia to improve the calibre of settlers. In 1837, he convinced 10 men, all Germans trained in missionary work by Johannes Gossner, to travel to Moreton Bay convict settlement.  All had practical skills with trades such as bricklaying, farming, tailoring, blacksmithing, shoemaking etc. With wives and families in tow, plus two pastors, they set up their Zion mission overlooking what is now Toombul Shopping Centre, in the vicinity of Walkers Way.  They were accepted by the local aborigines, but were unable to convert any of them to Christianity.  When the mission closed, the land was subdivided, and many of the original settlers chose to purchase these blocks of land.

Their names live on in many streets and roads in the area, and most are buried in Nundah Historic Cemetery in Hedley Avenue, which is definitely worth a visit.

The monument in this little park was erected in 1938, to celebrate the centenary of the arrival of these first free settlers in what became the state of Queensland. It was heritage listed in 1998.

This is a small cache which was my first hide.  I have now replaced it three times. It is now a camo bison and no longer has room for swaps.  The parking area can be busy on weekdays.

Congratulations to C.Ponies and bac2 bay6 for being FTF.
