One of the less known parts of DuPuis is the Powerline Grade along the eastern perimeter. A one way trip is 13 miles long and can be traveled on foot, bike, horse, or car. As the name implies, the shellrock road parallels high tension power lines running south from the FPL Indiantown plant. The southern half of the road runs between a canal (with many resident alligators) and the adjacent Corbett WMA. You may also see otters, deer, birds and various Florida fauna. Bringing your camera is recommended. Happy caching!
Black racers or eastern racers (Coluber constrictor) are a very common species of nonvenmous snake found in North and Central America. As their name suggests, these snakes are dark in color and fast movers. They also have excellent vision. They feed on small animals and will climb trees to go after bird nests. Black racers will normally use their speed to escape danger, but if caught or cornered they will bite repeatedly and release a foul-smelling musk.
Black racers are sometimes confused for indigo snakes which are larger, slower, darker, and much less common.
