A tiny Geocache for a huge Volcano.
The Gunung Merapi (that means: Fire Mountain) is the most active Volcano in Indonesia. Most time of the year you can see smoke rising out of the crater. If you are on the top you even can hear a roaring and rumbling. The last big eruption started on the 25. October 2010 and went on for almost two month. After this eruption the volcano got smaller by 38m. Now he is 2930m high. The exact elevation varies from source to source. My GPS said 2923m. So while you are on the edge of the crater, see what you device says.
To get to the Geocache you have to take the north rout up the Volcano. The start of the hike is at New Selo (view additional Coordinates). You will see New Selo form far away, because the name is written in huge letters on the Mountain. Form New Selo to the Cache its about a 2-3 hours walk, depending on your personal fitness. Most people start during the night, so they can see the sunrise. If you want a Guide organise one in advance. But it is also perfectly doable without one. Since the path is always obvious so you can’t get lost.
BE AWARE THAT YOU ARE CLIMBING A VERY ACTIVE VOLCANO, AND THAT YOU ARE GOING AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS OR PEOPLE SAY YOU CAN’T GO UP AT THE MOMENT, SIMPLY DON’T GO!!!
Be prepared for changing weather condition, like cold wind, rain or hot sun. Take along enough Water, Food, your Camera, GPS Device and enjoy the hike.
The Geocache it self is located on a plateau 2690m high. The container is at one of the fixing cable of the weather station .
p.s Don't hesitate and attach some pictures on your log. _____________________________________________________
