Geocache Description:

NOTE:  This hike is not for the faint of heart.  This is a brutal hike just over 1 mile one way.  DO NOT attempt this hike if you have a bad heart, severely out of shape or have small children with you.  DO NOT attempt this hike at night or in the rain/snow as the trail would be to slippery and dangerous.  STAY ON the Bear Waller trail - follow the blue dots on the trees. Park at the Defeated Creek Recreational area at the Bear Waller hiking parking area.

This multi-cache will take you on an adventure along the Bear Waller hiking trail to an area referred to as 'Ash-Hopper Hollow'.  Though the hike out to this area may be quite strenuous the hike is worth it.  This is a very beautiful area on this trail.

"When we got home the house was all dark and still; so we went on down to the hut by the ash-hopper for to examine it.”
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

An 'Ash Hooper' is a V shaped container that was used in the old tyme days for soap making.  Another name for a similar container is called a lye leaching barrel.

Ash-Hopper Great Smokey Mnts

Lye is a fundatmental ingredient in soap and to obtain a lye solution wood ashes would be placed in this container so that water could be slowly run across them to produce a browish potash lye solution.  To keep the ash from draining into the final lye solution, straw and other fine twigs or sticks
would be placed in the hopper barrel with the wood ashes on top.  The final liquid solution would be collected underneath the v shaped barrel.
The Ash hopper would usually be stored in a shed to prevent rain from pouring over the ashes when not in use.  Another option would be to build a protectant roof over the Ash-Hopper.

We've come along way folks ... now you just go to the grocery store down the street to buy your favorite soap.
