Geocache Description:

This cache series is in honour of the tireless, and often shirtless, yobbos that call Banyo their castle.

Banyo is a suburb of northern Brisbane surrounded by Northgate, Virginia and Nudgee. It is approximately 11 kms north of the CBD and is easily accessible on the Shorncliffe citytrain line, many bus services, the Gateway Motorway or Sandgate Road. Although Banyo was originally settled as early as 1849, it wasn't until 1897 that the suburb was officially named by Commissioner of Railways, James Robert Dixon. Before that time, the area was known as 'Clapham Junction' ('Clapham' was apparently a local name in common use); however, according to the Queensland State Library's Brian Randall, James Dixon was seeking a name related to the establishment of the local railway station, and he selected the Aboriginal word 'banyo,' which means 'a small hill or mountain' or 'a ridge.'
(The 'hill' or 'ridge' Banyo was named after no longer exists in its original form - it was extensively quarried for the construction of Eagle Farm Airport by the US Army during WW2).

It is a community split between residential and industrial land usage, the latter being attracted by the accessibility of local transport, including the railway, motorway and airport. However, it is often looked down upon by its neighbours as a lower class, rundown area; emphasising the industrial aspect and noting it as a natural place for the Aussie Yobbo to reside.

Yobbo is a slang term for an uncouth or thuggish working-class person. An Australian lout, it is somewhat similar to the American red-neck, although there are some differences. Yobbo habitats are usually outer suburbia, and male yobbos normally reside with female yobbos, known as Sheilas, and large canines often looking a bull terrier but mostly of no discernible breed. Typically a yobbo has automated transport of a ute kind, or a 1970’s dated vehicle such as a Datsun or Torana.

============
The Yobbo lives in a rundown, old and barely still standing wooden home, mostly built in the 1940's. It is surrounded by broken down vehicles, and car parts, and the front lawn is just dirt from where they are parked.

First Yobbo honours for the Cacheteers - ayepeacee, Nyissaflutterby and Brightskies.
