Mermaid Pool is easily accessible from the KZN Wildlife office
car-park. Bring a swimming towel and a keen eye and you could spot
some fossils in the Sandstone here too !!
At GZ, you will be really close to the pool itself. There is a
great place to swim at the top of the light colored Sandstone
A natural rim-flow pool...
There are a few small trees that are all fossilised in the same
way. They are all lying horizontally and are all in the same thick
layer of lightly colored crème to grey, medium grained Sandstone
rock. Im not an Archeologist or Geologist but this makes me think
that this was once a prehistoric land slide/slip !!
Fossilised trees...
Now, the river has carved its way through this rock to expose the
fossilised trees. The trees look like charcoal, but this is the
remains after the mineralisation process.
If you know more about this or have any other ideas, then please
add it to your log.
Fossilised trees +/-100mm dia
Apparently, there is a cave site in one of the valleys above this
point with fossilised footprints of a small lizzard-like
dinosaur.
Its location is still a secret...
DONT forget to take a pen to sign the
log!!
