Cheesecake Brook is a small stream that runs through Newton,
flowing underground from its headwaters near Brae Burn Country Club
and “daylighting” in West Newton near Washington
Street. It continues through backyards until it reaches Eddy
Street. From Eddy Street onward, this culverted brook runs down the
center of the boulevard, Albemarle Road, onward to the Charles
River
In the past century much of the land along this boulevard has
become one of Newton’s most important open spaces –
Albemarle Park.
In the late 1800’s, the city of Newton commissioned Charles
Eliot, a landscape architect and partner of Frederick Olmsted, to
provide a design and means of managing what is now called
Cheesecake Brook Greenway. Although much of Cheesecake Brook has
been submerged under cement, turnpike and backyards, the area where
it has been channeled above ground recalls the still timely concern
of Eliot and Olmsted to maintain open space in the face of a
growing population. Currently, through the efforts of community
groups such as the Friends of Albemarle, a comprehensive plan to
repair Cheesecake Brook and improve the environmental integrity of
this area is in place. (Sally Brecher)
A stretch of the brook from Eddy Street to Watertown Street that
had been fenced in and overgrown is being turned into a park and, a
focal point for the neighborhood. The cache is located on this
stretch of the newly improved park. You DO NOT have to leave the
improved walkway to retrieve the container
You will recognize the container if you have done any of my
Veterans Memorial caches. Log only so BYOP…Please remember
where you found it and replace in same spot so hint will be
valid.
