EN: St. Catherine church on the top of Island
Badija (in the Korcula archipelagus) dates from the late 15th
century. It belongs to the Franciscans, who have big monastery on
the coast of Badija, well visible when approaching the island. Fra
Jozo Zovko is the carismatic Franciscan who was the priest at
Medjugorje, during the alleged Madonna appearence in 1981. He was
moved to the Badija parish a few years ago, and is working on
complete renovation of this area (some construction can be seen at
the main building).
Apparently,
Partisans (yugoslav freedom fighters) built their lookout post on
top of this small church during the WWII. There is a relatively
decent road going to the top, starting behind the old basketball
court, just behind the other Badija cache (Badija
Island - GC2E4YQ), on N42°57.082 E17°9.923. It is a 15-min
walk, high terrain rating is because it is an island and you need a
boat to get here.
There are taxiboats going to Badija roughly every half an hour from
the main port of Korcula, the last one from Badija is at 18:30.
Current price is around 40 kuna. Or, you can rent a boat for the
day and visit the little islands in the Korcula archipelagus, check
the local rental agencies.
