Some History:
Shave ice or Hawaiian shave ice is an ice-based dessert made by shaving a block of ice. While the product can resemble a snow cone, snow cones are made with crushed, rather than shaved, ice. Shaving produces a very fine ice that appears snow-like. This extremely fine texture causes syrups added to it to be absorbed by the ice rather than simply surrounding it. A properly made shave ice product rarely requires a straw, since the flavors are in the ice and not at the bottom of the cup. Hawaiian shave ice is traditionally served "rainbow" with three flavors and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom. This style of shaved ice is the signature dessert of Hale'iwa on the north shore of the island of O'ahu.
Shave ice traces its history to Japan, where it is known as Kakigori and dates back to the Heian Period. Shave ice enjoyed world-wide popularity after Japanese plantation workers immigrated to the Hawaiian islands and took their traditional dessert with them.
Cache Location:
Located in Historic Hale'iwa Town this "Shave Ice Store" boasts that they produce "1,000 shave ice" on a warm and sunny day. Judging by the lines I sometimes see there I believe this is a gross understatement LOL. If you get a chance step inside and check out the pictures of all the "famous" people that have also stopped by for a cool one.
