Prislop pass (Pasul Prislop) is a mountain pass in northern Romania, connecting the historical regions of Maramures and Bukovina over Rodna Mountains, in the Eastern Carpathians. Prislop pass is situated at an altitude of 1.416 meters, being one of the highest passes in Romania.
Prislop pass offers you a great view of Maramures and Rodna Mountains. If the weather is good, the hills around Cabana Alpina are superb viewpoints and you can be fascinated by stately peaks of Ineu (2.279 m) and Pietrosu (2.303 m), highest peaks in Rodnei Mts., or neighbouring Caercanu (1.846 m) of Maramures Mts. From the pass you can set out to the north into the wild and uninhabited Maramures Mts. You can also choose southern Rodnei Mts., the main ridge is only two hours of walking.
Throughout the Middle Ages Romania suffered Tatar raids. The last raid took place in 1717, Tatars looted Maramures but their campaign was halted here, in the battle at Prislop pass. You can see the monument reminding this event. On the top of the pass, in front of cottage Cabana Alpina, stands a traditional wooden gate called "Gate of Maramures". Besides the mentioned cottage and the monument, orthodox monks are bulding new Monastery of Saint Trinity.
The famous festival Hora la Prislop takes place there on the closest Sunday to August 1st. Each year thousands of visitors come to Prislop to celebrate or just to see this traditional feast.
