Our neighbourhood has lots of great "snickets" which is the British name for public accessways between streets. The trig at the end of Kupe Road is the best place to park if you drive and gives the cache it's terrain rating but we recommend you park in Mission Bay and walk the snicket. This will be just under a kilometre. Take the stairs from the west end of Mission Bay.
Enjoy the Savage Memorial - there's a cache hidden near by - then head across Bastion Point / Takaparawhau Regional Park to the cache.
The cache is a camo'ed mint tin attached to the pointy end of the tear drop by a magnet. Sit on the outside and reach in. There are 2 bits of metal glued near the top to attract it so it must be replaced the same way. BYO pen.
From where you are sitting you have great views north to Rangitoto and west to the city and Marae.
Please respect the signs saying the Marae is Private Property. We visited as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival in September 2008 but there is strict protocol concerning entering the grounds.
Update March 2012 - the memorial stone used to be on a freestanding pedestal and has been moved. The cache is in the same place but it is now a longer reach but you should still sit with your feet outside and facing east.
