Very close to GZ you will find a monument to the construction of
this pipeline infrastructure. Another example of bits of history
throughout our City that most people would probably not know ever
exists.
Moonie to Brisbane Pipeline
The pipeline commenced operations in 1964. It was the first
trunk pipeline built in Australia and was designed to carry crude
oil from the Moonie oilfield, 330 kilometres west of Brisbane, to
the Lytton storage facility, located at the mouth of the Brisbane
River.
The oil that was transported to Brisbane was sold to and
processed by the nearby refineries, to produce a variety of
petroleum products.
The pipeline is constructed of 273 millimetre diameter mild
steel pipe and has a protective tape wrapping along its entire
length. This tape and a cathodic protection system protect the
pipeline against corrosion.
During 2007 and early 2008 the pipeline suffered a couple of
leaks, which resulted in oil spills in Algester and Carindale.
In April 2008, Santos (the owner of the pipeline) formally
advised the Queensland Government in that it would not seek to
reopen the Moonie to Brisbane oil pipeline.
No need for a hint as GZ is very obvious.
