Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends are based on the Railway Series of books written by the Reverend W. Awdry (1911-1997). The stories were created in 1942 to entertain the Reverend's son, Christopher, who was confined to bed with measles.
This is one of a series of caches dedicated to finding Thomas (Where's Thomas?) but first you have to find his friends. Thomas is a cheeky, fussy little engine who wears #1 on his side and never lets anyone forget it. Joining him in his adventures on the Island of Sodor are his engine friends, including cheerful Percy, moody James and the proud but boastful Gordon.
They are joined by the coaches Annie and Clarabel, Bertie the Bus, Terence the Tractor and Harold the Helicopter, to name a few. Sir Topham Hatt, Superintendent of the railroad, is the kindly boss who keeps everyone in order.
Diesel, sometimes known as Devious Diesel, was the first diesel engine to arrive on the Island of Sodor. He is coloured black, has six wheels, and has a very distinctive appearance. Diesel is a scheming, oily trickster with a short temper who likes to cause trouble wherever he goes. He first came to Sodor as a character in the Railway Series book "Duck and the Diesel Engine", but he spread mean-spirited rumours that caused the Fat Controller to send him away. Despite the Fat Controller telling him he would not be welcomed back to Sodor, Diesel has returned a number of times when the other engines need an extra hand and no other engine is available. At present, he appears to be living on Sodor.
Find Diesel and he will help you (reluctantly) find Thomas!
(Is he hiding with the trucks at Ferry Meadows?)
** Please Note **
The cache is not situated ON the railway - this is an active railway, trains can arrive at any time without warning!
There are footpaths leading to the site, do not block any gates or entrance, no need to tresspass on private land and is accessable as a driveby for a short time if the NVR yard is open suggested parking below.
This cache is dedicated to NVR cachers "mad.bird" & the late "railwaymaster" both Diesel crew on this line.
2017 UPDATE
The station here on Ham lane is now the "Night Mail" Museum and home to the Travelling Post Office. There is a small gauge Mini Geokid friendly railway across the track from GZ.
