29 Aug 23 View Image Clodock Church Clodock church is dedicated to St Clydawg, King of Ewias, who was martyred about 500AD. The present building stands on the site of his tomb, beside the river Monnow and overlooked by the Black Mountains. It dates from the 12th century and is Grade 1 listed. When you visit the church, make sure you also stop in at the Cornewall Arms. This is the sort of pub rarely found - a real delight which has barely changed for a century or two. 28 Aug 23 View Image Severn Bridge Officially opened on 8 September 1966, the bridge had been several years in the making and many, many more in the planning. The first proposal for a road bridge across the Severn had been made as long ago as 1824 and came from no less a person than the renowned engineer and road builder Thomas Telford. He had been asked to recommend ways of improving the mail service between London and South Wales and quickly came to the conclusion that a bridge to span the Severn was the best option. 22 Aug 23 View Image Small Hythe church The church replaced a medieval chapel which was destroyed by fire when the hamlet of Small Hythe was burnt to the ground.The church is unusually constructed of red brick which it is thought may have been imported from the Low Countries in exchange for timber from the Weald of Kent.The stepped gables of the west & east walls indicate Dutch influence.The porch was added in 1866.In this church Dame Ellen Terry worshipped & her funeral service was held here on 24th July 1928.Her home,Small H 7 Aug 23 View Image Whitstable Harbour The railway has closed but the harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy. The railway route, known as The Crab and Winkle Line, is now a cycle path which leads to the neighbouring city of Canterbury.
