DSC_0555 At the eastern end of downtown Wichita, Kansas, Spike (lower left) is admiring the 1887 Rock Island Depot. The depot was originally built for the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway Company.
Across the street from Union Station, Spike has spotted the Great Plains Transportation Museum open weekends only. There one can explore a number of pieces of rolling stock including a 1938 Santa Fe steam locomotive which sits on the elevated tracks next to the museum.

DSC_0550 Next Spike has noticed that adjacent to the Rock Island Depot is Wichita’s Union Station which opened in 1914. You can see the elevated tracks to the right of the station. Union Station used to house a Fred Harvey Restaurant. Neither station is currently being used as a railroad station.
Finally Spike has stopped for a final visit in Wichita with a distant cousin before continuing his journey.
