Current Goal

The mission for the "Lewis & Clark’s Journey to the Pacific" Travel Bug is to Start in Illinois at the “Lewis & Clark Cache” (GC185F), where the actual expedition began, and follow the Westward route of the Lewis & Clark Trail to Washougal, Washington and the “Washougal History Cache” (GC4EBA).

About This Item

The idea is to see if the Travel Bug can make the journey faster than Lewis & Clark did nearly 200 years ago (May 14, 1804 ~ November 3, 1805). The Bug does not need to follow the exact route shown on the map. Density and location of caches will make that impossible. Please try to keep it as close to the trail as you can and limit modes of transport to the ground only. (No airplanes please!) One request that we make is that you photograph the Bug with any Lewis & Clark heritage markers that it encounters along the way and upload them with your Bug report.

Once it reaches the "Washougal History Cache", the Cache/Bug owners will take it the rest of the way to the Pacific at the mouth of the Columbia River, thus completing its westward journey...

...and perhaps beginning its eastward journey?

Received this note from Warnera. The journey will begin again soon! Thanks, Warnera!

We begin our Journey this summer on June 25th at the South Dakota boarder. This past weekend (5/17), we did the sights and caches between Omaha and our S.D. starting point. We did 7 caches , 6 of which were L&C related. We visited the Floyd Monument, the Floyd River Museum, Stone State Park, Ponca State Park, several campsite historical markers along NE HWY 12, the Ionia Volcano, Spirit Mound, the Vermillion W.H. Over History Measum, the Argo Hotel along the Shannon Trail in Crofton, NE, and the L&C Trail Museum at Gavin''s Point Dam. Have numerous pictures of all these sites with the TB to load soon so check back! Hoping to make it to the Onawa reinactment prior to our trip as well. During the trip we will attend the reinactment at Great Falls and then leave the TB in Idaho where someone will need to help it finish its mission.! Here is the website about our trip where you can view our itinerary: http://www.hastings.edu/academic/education/landc.htm

L&C The Argo Hotel - Shannon Trail

Drove 4 miles south of Gavin's Point Dam to do the Argo Hotel Cache. It's along the Shannon Trail - poor Private Shannon who got lost and wandered alone for several days! The Cache is located at a historic hotel in the town of Crofton, NE.

Calumet Bluff

Lewis & Clark Visitor Center: On August 27, 1804, the group passed the James River and prepared to meet with Yankton Sioux. Sgt. Nathaniel Pryor had visited the Yankton camp and saw what has become the classic symbol of Plains Indians—a tipi. On August 29 & 30, the two groups met at Calumet Bluffs on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a visitor center with natural and cultural historical exhibits and also manages four campgrounds below Gavins Point Dam.
