Over the holidays, a beautiful golden retriever escaped his home while his family was away. Shortly after, the SCPA found him. He waited for his family to come, but they never showed. That did little to curb his joyful demeanor, greeting every single potential adoptor at the door to his kennel. This golden smile caught the eye of a new grandmother, who thought the dog would be perfect for her daughter's family. The family called ahead, an orange reserved sign was placed on his kennel. When the family arrived, and the mother knelt in front of his kennel, comepletely in love, another adopter asked from behind, "What does Reserved mean?" The mother turned, smiling, and said "That means he's ours."
He was named Hobie, after the sailboat Hobie Cat, and he cruised into his new family life. He was now responsible for not one, but TWO wild toddlers that thought he was a horse. He went on many adventures with his family, many self directed (escaped to the carpet store...TWICE). Hobie lived joyfully as the first golden founder of many family dogs to come.
In his eleventh year, Hobie fell to cancer, but returned to say his goodbyes as a monarch butteryfly that snuck its way into the house. He taught his successors how to wait at the top of the steps for the light to go on, as I'm sure he is doing now.
