About This Item

Fritzchen

Fritzchen is a Mainzelmale. One of six cartoon characters that are mainly used as advertising separators on ZDF. The other 5 Mainzel men are called Anton, Berti, Conni, Det and Edi.

Its name goes back to the city of Mainz, the seat of the Second German Television (ZDF), and to the brownies. Their creator was Wolf Gerlach. The Mainzelmännchen were first seen on ZDF on April 2, 1963.
The Mainzelmännchen were very popular with the public right from the start and have not only served the station as an advertising separator for a long time, but have also developed into the mascots and an important part of ZDF's corporate identity.
Her great success also led to appearances in other media such as radio plays, children's books and children's songs as well as numerous merchandise products.

Fritzchen is portrayed as the sportiest and smartest of the group, which is also reflected in the fact that he (since 1993) is the only one in the group who wears a headband instead of a hat.
