Goodbye IGKT Track Tag, it’s time to let you go. I’ve dropped you in a tunnel in a the forest of Domaine des Lacs near Silenrieux in Belgium. You’ll have to listen to inane jet skiers race each other while you’re here but it’s otherwise a pretty area. Good luck! 🪢

Bon retour en Belgique! Welkom terug in België! Welcome back to Belgium! In fact, you’ve travelled through France, Belgium, back into France for a bit, and finally into Belgium again. All of that just to get GC40, mainland Europe’s oldest geocache. It’s in a lovely forest in the Namur region. Now to turn around and retrace our route back to Lille. 🇧🇪

You’ve made it to the Au Front Mega in the Vimy region of Pas-de-Calais, France. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Battle of Arras during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle occurred from 9 to 12 April 1917. The battle was the first occasion when the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together and it was made a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice. A 100 ha (250-acre) portion of the former battleground serves as a memorial park and site of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.

It’s bad luck that the Mega has very wet weather. Lots of mud while looking for caches. Someone even found some unexploded ordnance very close to a cache so that one had to be disabled. 🪖

Bienvenue en France! Welcome to France! You are on your way to a Mega but your accommodation is an hour north in Lille, the capital of the Hauts-de-France region. Lille has had an eventful history from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. Very often besieged during its history, it belonged successively to the Kingdom of France, the Burgundian State, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany and the Spanish Netherlands before being definitively attached to the France of Louis XIV following the War of Spanish Succession along with the entire territory making up the historic province of French Flanders. 🇫🇷

Spent our time in Brussels caching and visiting the sights. The Manneken Pis, Dutch for Little Pissing Boy, is a 55.5 cm bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain's basin. I love how it so ridiculous but is a symbol of the city. It even has an extensive costume wardrobe that it gets dressed up in.
You also visited the Gran-Place/Grote Markt, the central square of Brussels. It is surrounded by opulent Baroque guildhalls of the former Guilds of Brussels and two larger buildings, the Town Hall, and the neo-Gothic King's House or Bread House building, containing the Brussels City Museum. It was absolutely stunning when I walked into for the first time many years ago knowing nothing about it and it’s still absolutely stunning now. Yesterday was sunny and all the gilt finishing were shining. It’s cloudy and grey today though. Time to move on to another country. ⛲️

Welkom in België! Bienvenue en Belgique! Welcome to Belguim! I used to come here a lot when I lived in the Netherlands but this is my first time here caching. I was running a bit early for my accommodation so I thought I’d take you to the European Parliament in Brussels. Strasbourg is the seat of the European Parliament, but most Parliamentary Com- mittee activity takes place in Brussels, while its General Secretariat is based in Luxembourg. 🇧🇪

Luxembourg City occupies a picturesque site on precipitous cliffs that drop into the narrow valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. Although Luxembourg City is not particularly large, its layout is complex, as the city is set on several levels. That makes for an exhausting Wherigo search going up and down. Signed the cache and then it was off to the station and onto Belguim. 🚆

A great thing about Luxembourg is that all public transport in the country is free to everyone. We took advantage of that and grabbed a train to Bissen, home to a steel factory operated by ArcelorMittal.

Despite free public transport. Luxembourg has one of the highest rates of car ownership in the world and is the number one country for the highest density of luxury cars - one luxury car for every 13 residents. This places Luxembourg ahead of Belgium, Germany, and the UK which counts one luxury car per 31, 32, and 40 inhabitants, respectively. In 2023, 1,136 Porsches were registered compared to 985 Citroëns.

I guess you can achieve all these things if your the country has a thriving financial services sector and serves as a global hub for private banking like Luxembourg. To that end, you finished the day with a visit to the European Investment Bank where Mr Wombat spends quite a bit of time. 🏎️
