A steel-gray metal, tungsten is found in several ores including wolframite and scheelite. It is remarkable for its robust physical properties, especially the fact that it has the highest melting point of all the non-alloyed metals; 6,192°F.
The name "tungsten" comes from the Nordic "tung sten", meaning "heavy stone".
This particular piece of tungsten was machined in the machine shop where I work, but the endmill cutter broke, gouged the edge and is therefore unusable.
