About This Item

Bokkie

The national animal of South Africa is the springbok, which also gives its name to the South African rugby team - fondly known as "the Boks". The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) gets its common name from its characteristic jumping display - pronk in Afrikaans.
Rugby is one of South Africa's big three sports, alongside soccer and cricket. For the many South African fans of the game, rugby is a serious matter, a source of bursting pride and joy - or shattering disappointment.
South Africa played its first international in 1891, but it was not until they toured Britain in 1906 under the captaincy of Paul Roos that they became known as the Springboks.
The sport was segregated under apartheid, with different organising bodies for different races and the national side uniformly white. Sporting links with South Africa became increasing controversial in the second half of the 20th century, with Springbok tours attracting growing demonstrations and the Gleneagles Agreement of 1977 discouraging sporting contacts with the country. South Africa was banned from the first two rugby World Cups because of apartheid. It was readmitted to international rugby in 1992, after official sporting discrimination was dismantled.
In 1995 South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup and the Springboks went on to win the epic final 15 - 12 against traditional rivals the All Blacks.
The Springboks are leaving for England on 11 September 2015 where they will play their hearts out representing our country from 18 September 2015.
